THE BEST SHAPE OF MY LIFE: HOW A MINDSET SHIFT CHANGED EVERYTHING
SIMONE DOULAVERAS
I can trace every success in my life back to a positive shift in my mindset. I can also pinpoint the times when things weren’t going right – such as when goals felt out of reach or my self-worth was at an all-time low – to negative shifts in my thinking.
The beauty of the mind is that it’s malleable; you have the power to train it, guide it and reshape your experience of life accordingly.
THE POWER OF A MINDSET SHIFT
In the past, I followed strict diets and worked out ‘harder’ with a high-impact training regime. But despite all of that, I never achieved the results I have today.
So, what changed?
It wasn’t about the latest fad diet or a body-bashing workout routine. It was a shift in my attitude towards myself. Changing the way I viewed myself, my goals and my worth directly influenced how I trained, how I nourished myself, and ultimately, the result I was able to achieve.
When we set goals, we usually do so because we want to improve or change something in our lives. This is an exciting positive step in our personal growth.
However, the common response to wanting to improve is often self-criticism, anxiety and a fear of failure. Associating shame with where you are today only makes it harder to achieve your goals. Negative self-talk and self-sabotage aren’t helpful. They only hold you back.
A positive mindset shift not only becomes a powerful motivator but also creates lasting, meaningful change.
6 MINDSET SHIFTS THAT CHANGED THE WAY I MOVED, LOOKED AND FELT
Let go of ‘cheat day’ mentality
For a long time, I fell into the trap of thinking that a ‘cheat day’ was a free pass to overindulge. But I soon realised this mentality would only lead to a spiral of unhealthy choices. Instead, I’ve adopted a balanced approach. If I enjoy a treat during the day, like a sweet snack or glass of wine, I balance it out by keeping dinner light. This helps me stay on track and avoid the spiral.
Shift your focus to nourishment
Rather than focusing on what I shouldn’t eat or obsessing over calories, I began to view food as a source of nourishment for my body. I started paying attention to how certain foods made me feel. For example, swapping salted cashews in my salad for toasted chickpeas gave me the same crunch but with more nutrients and less bloat. These small changes not only made me feel better but also helped me achieve the results I wanted.
Make your workout your ‘you time’
I stopped viewing exercise as a chore and started treating my daily workout as an opportunity for me to escape the stress of the day. Whether it’s 30 minutes or an hour, these moments became my time to focus on myself. This shift in mindset made me more consistent and helped me put more energy into my workouts.
Reward yourself in ways that align with your goals
I used to reward myself with food, such as treating myself to a dessert after hitting a goal. However, I found that these food-based rewards only pulled me further from my objectives. Now, I reward myself with experiences that are a treat but also align with my wellness journey. Whether it’s a facial, a sauna session, or a new dress, these rewards leave me feeling rejuvenated and motivated without derailing my progress.
Don’t underestimate the power of recovery and low-impact sessions
Consistency is key to seeing long-term results, and recovery is just as important as high-intensity workouts. I used to overlook the benefits of low-impact activities such as stretching or yoga, but now I realise that these recovery sessions are essential to keeping my body healthy and mind focused.
Clarify your ‘why’
Understanding why I set a particular goal has been crucial to staying motivated, I stopped focusing on external pressure and started connecting with the deeper reasons behind my ambitions. Instead of thinking, I need to lose weight and look good, I shifted my focus to reasons that felt more meaningful, I want to feel confident in my own skin. Keeping these positive motivations at the forefront of my mind has made the journey so much more rewarding.
TO SUM UP
A positive mindset has been the game-changer in my life. Remember, the mind is powerful. By training it to see the positive sides of things, you will find that your body and results will follow. A positive mindset is not just a motivator; it’s the foundation for lasting change.
